IN ENGLISH:

Spitsbergen - an expedition in the footsteps of Arctic explorers.

Discover the land of ice with us!

Enjoy a drink at the northernmost bar in the world, explore the abandoned towns of Svalbard, and feel like an Arctic explorer. Join us for the adventure of a lifetime on Spitsbergen! An 8-day expedition into the incredible winter Arctic - the territory of polar bears, Arctic seals, and reindeer. Our expedition is the essence of the best that Spitsbergen has to offer, an adventure full of excitement, exploring the far north in the footsteps of the first Arctic explorers. You will face biting cold, meters of snowdrifts, temperatures dropping to -30 degrees, and breathtaking views of Arctic fjords, abandoned whaling and mining settlements, and, if luck is on our side, an encounter with the most formidable predator of these lands - the polar bear. We will traverse this challenging terrain on snowmobiles, on foot, and with dog sleds, following in the footsteps of explorers like Willem Barents.

You will visit Longyearbyen, the cradle of civilization in the Arctic, the mining town of Barentsburg, and the abandoned "ghost town" of Pyramiden. You will enter a unique glacier cave, cover dozens of kilometers on snowmobiles, and steer dog sleds. The days will be long and intense, and in the evenings, we will watch for the Northern Lights.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival to Spitsbergen

Arrival from to Longyearbyen, transfer, and accommodation in a hotel.

Exploration of the city of Longyearbyen. Meeting with the Arctic guides of our expedition - briefing and safety rules during the expedition, navigation in snowdrifts, on ice, and on snowmobiles - basic safety in the city and beyond, including rules for encounters with polar bears, cooperation with Arctic guides, and the answer to the question: why does a guide outside the city always have a weapon on hand? (depending on connections, it may happen that the departure from Warsaw will be a day earlier, and an overnight stay in Oslo will be required).

Day 2: TEMPELFJORD

Get to know your snowmobile, picturesque Tempelfjord, an abandoned hut of Arctic explorers, and a glacier cave.

We will pick up your snowmobile and expedition equipment - you will receive a helmet, a suit, warm mittens, a balaclava, and snow boots. The snowmobile will be your companion for the next 5 days, giving the expedition great autonomy and the ability to visit places that most visitors to the archipelago do not have access to. After picking up the snowmobiles and a quick training session, we will head to Tempelfjord, a beautiful fjord with the famous Fredheim hut. The route is very picturesque and allows you to get acquainted with snowmobile driving on flat terrain - for those who have not ridden before, this will be the first snowmobile riding training. If conditions are favorable, we will also visit the Tellbreen glacier cave. We will return to Longyearbyen in the evening.

Day 3: BARENTSBURG

The last mining town, remains of Colesbukta, a traveler's shelter.

We will ride snowmobiles along the fjords - visiting one of the last working mining towns on the island, named after the explorer of Spitsbergen, William Barents. In the morning, we will check out of the hotel (we can leave some things behind and pick them up the next day) and set out on snowmobiles to Barentsburg, a mining town inhabited by about 300 people. On the way, we will visit the abandoned settlement of Colesbukta, the place from which coal was transported 60 years ago, and today there are ruins of houses - well-preserved due to the dry Arctic climate - there you will see what an authentic shelter for Arctic travelers looks like. After a few hours of travel, we will reach Barentsburg, where we will stay overnight. Barentsburg is located on the Gronfjord, offering a magnificent view of the Greenland Sea. We will explore the town and have a drink at the famous Red Bear Bar (what an original name!)

Day 4 BARENTSBURG - LONGYEARBYEN

Lenin even in the Arctic, Svalbard handicrafts

In the morning, we will explore the town - where its communist past is still alive - you will see the statue of Lenin and the call for the common construction of communism, amenities for mine workers such as a swimming pool, library, etc. For those interested, there is an opportunity to visit a crafts shop or send a postcard from the northern post office. We will return to Longyearbyen by a different route than the previous day - unless the guides consider the conditions to be too difficult. After arriving in the city, a traditional dinner and rest.

Day 5 PYRAMIDEN

Off the beaten path - Arctic wilderness, abandoned settlement, Pyramiden, the city of bears

Early in the morning, we will head towards Pyramiden, the "ghost town." Coal mining was carried out here from 1911 to 1998. In 1998, the settlement was evacuated and abandoned. Today, it can only be reached by sea (in summer) or by snowmobile (in winter). Pyramiden is an icon of Svalbard - it was here that the film "Arctic Abyss" was shot, and the incredible atmosphere of abandoned buildings in the heart of the Arctic will forever be etched in your memory. Pyramiden is located on the Billefjord, practically in the center of the island. The name comes from the pyramid-shaped mountain adjacent to the town. It is about 120 km from Barentsburg and about 60 km from Longyearbyen. Now, only a few people live there, the hotel staff, and the guides. In the evening, we will take a walk around the town - only with guides carrying firearms and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Day 6 RETURN TO LONGYEARBYEN

A walk through the bear town, an abandoned settlement.

In the morning, we will explore the settlement and the buildings where time stopped over 40 years ago. Pyramiden is located in an area frequently visited by polar bears, so we move around it only with guides armed and with the utmost caution. In winter, Pyramiden can only be reached by snowmobile, so you will experience true Arctic isolation. In the afternoon, we will return to Longyearbyen, say goodbye to our snowmobiles. In the evening, dinner in Longyearbyen and a "hunt for the Northern Lights."

Day 7 Glacier cave, glacier trekking, huskies at home, dog sleds In the morning, we will go on a several-kilometer trek on the glacier. We will enter an ice cave - a structure carved into the ice walls by flowing water. Such narrow, enclosed caves located several meters inside the glacier are a unique attraction, unparalleled anywhere else and breathtaking. (Trekking is not technically demanding, and the whole experience will take about 4-5 hours) In the afternoon, in the style of real Arctic explorers, we will go on a dog sled ride. You will dress in furs, wrap up like Roald Amundsen, and sit on traditional snow sleds - an experience that allows you to feel like Arctic explorers from past centuries and understand how incredibly brave these people were. After the sled ride, our guides will invite you to a warm treat and a glass of their Arctic specialty ;)
